DETAILED SYNOPSIS:
Curtis Jackson grew up in the rough neighborhood of Jamaica Queens, NY. His mother, Sabrina Jackson, a notorious crack dealer and his father, unknown, abandoned his mother before he was born . This left Sabrina to scrape together what she could for her child’s necessities and the deadly game of hustling crack was the only way she knew how. When Curtis was eight, his mother was mysteriously murdered. There were no suspects and the police cited a crack deal gone bad as the cause. Curtis, now orphaned, went to live with his grandparents. He was always interested in the hip-hop scene and the bling so Curtis would end taking of the family business of dealing crack, like his mother, so he could afford the finer things including the music that would, ultimately, inspire him. No longer going by Curtis, 50 Cent introduced to Jam Master Jay in late ’96. Jay thought 50 was rough around the edges and didn’t know about the technical aspect of music, but definitely had talent. Jay took 50 under his wing in 1996 and signed him to his small Queens record label; JMJ Records. He and 50 worked together on music and became close friends as Jay guided him farther and farther away from the lure of the streets and the crack game, but when 50 ran short on cash he would have to pick up his old ways. After being introduced to the industry, he quickly hooked up with two of the Industry’s greatest hit-makers, the Trackmasters. They collaborated with 50 and produced 36 rough cut tracks which would become the songs for 50’s first official album, “The Power of a Dollar”.
50 Cent signed his first deal with Columbia Records for $250,000 and received a $65,000 advance. He was on his way to stardom when Irv Gotti, a neighborhood rival from his past, stabbed and beat him with two other men outside of the New York nightclub, “Hit Factory”. Exactly two months later, while having nearly healed his stab wounds from the incident, violence would track him down again. 50 was sitting in the front passenger seat of a car talking to his friend, Curtis Brown, when an unknown assailant crept up behind the car unnoticed. The first shot broke the glass, and startled 50 and his friend Curtis. 50, now in a frantic struggle with the attacker, would strike the assailant several times while he fired 9 shots, hitting 50 in the arm, hand, jaw and legs. The interior of the car was drenched in blood and even though 50 and his friend Curtis were both hit by the bullets, his friend Curtis was still able to escape the assault and drove directly to Jamaica Hospital Medical Center. After spending 13 days recovering in the Hospital, Columbia Records decided to drop 50 Cent from their label and they would shelve his album “Power of a Dollar”. After working hard at coming back with another album 50’s moral would be shattered once again. In late October of 2002, his mentor Jam Master Jay would be tragically murdered. This incident would create major law enforcement attention to the Murder Inc. camp and their rivalry against 50 Cent and friend, Jam Master Jay. Irv Gotti and Fred McGriff of Murder Inc. were rumored to have been involved in 50’s stabbing, shooting and now his mentor’s death. The feud would fizzle out when the heat was turned up by law enforcement agencies including the FBI and Fred McGriff would be sentenced to prison for unrelated crimes. 50 would mourn his friend’s death and yet still continue his plight. Still running the crack game to make ends meet, his next big break came later that year. Eminem and the legendary Dr. Dre caught wind of 50 Cent’s talent. Eminem told Dre that he thought 50 was going to be the next big thing to hit the music industry, and that he needed that “next big thing” to be under Shady/Aftermath Records. After more talks and listening to demos, Eminem signed 50 Cent to his label for a reported $1 million after a small industry bidding war. 50’s album with Shady Records was a huge success and the Dre produced hit single “In da Club” which became an instant hip-hop anthem. He went on to create track after track of musical genius and amaze the industry with his talent. In a world where the odds are stacked so far against him, where his mother dies and he doesn’t have a father, where the only way for him to make a dollar is in the same business that killed his mother, where prison becomes a weekend vacation spot and then when he is on his way to better life only to defy the Gods and survive being stabbed, shot, and left for dead-twice, this one man has shocked us all by conquering these most outrageous odds by becoming one of Hip Hop’s biggest Super Stars.
