DETAILED SYNOPSIS:
Lou Rawls, who died in January of this year, was a leading figure in popular music for over fifty years, as well as being one of its most respected and versatile.
His early roots were in gospel, as was the case with many of the great soul voices of his generation. Following spells with two of Chicago’s finest gospel groups, The Highway Q.C.’s and The Pilgrim Travelers, his move into secular music, as he branched out into the fields of jazz, R&B, soul and even easy-listening, proved highly successful.
During his heyday period during the latter half of the Sixties and throughout the Seventies he notched up over thirty hit singles and two dozen chart albums. As a result of his years playing live dates to audiences of all types, Rawls was a truly consummate showman in his later years, as attested by the two superb concert performances which make up this dvd.
Recorded at the 1992 and 1995 North Sea Jazz Festivals, they both demonstrate his extraordinary rapport with his audiences as well as the wide scope of his repertoire.
The featured songs are all proven stage favourites and include all his biggest hits. They range from his moving rendition of the Broadway standard ‘Send In The Clowns’ to up-tempo R&B standards like ‘Hoochie Coochie Man’ and ‘Tobacco Road’. In a more soulful vein, they range from the cool groove of ‘You’ll Never Find Another Love Like Mine’- his biggest career hit - to his tribute to great friend Sam Cooke, ‘Bring It On Home To Me’.
